Shopify Analysis For eCommerce Business

This year, e-commerce platform Shopify advises retailers to prepare for trends such as the growing influence of younger consumers.

Shopify’s first annual report, “The Future of Commerce2021,” uses its global retailer and consumer data to forecast changes in the retail landscape in the coming year.

Five key predictions for retailers in the report. Following is an overview.

1. Young Consumers

According to Shopify, the following subtrends are being driven by young consumers in particular:

  • Since the pandemic, 84 percent of consumers have shopped online, while 65 percent have shopped in-store.
  • 57 percent of consumers say they will shop in stores on a regular basis in the next six months, while 79 percent say they will shop online on a regular basis.
  • 67 percent of younger shoppers(18-34) have shifted more of their shopping to the internet since the pandemic.

2. Physical Retail

Physical retail will change as we know it, providing new opportunities for local businesses.

  • According to Shopify’s analysis, retailers who adopted digital and mobile features and experiences in 2020 will help revive physical stores and enable them to take advantage of proximity to local consumers.
  • In comparison to the same period last year, the number of Shopify stores accepting contactless payments increased by 122 percent during the pandemic.

3. Independent Shopping

Consumers love to buy in a store that is not controlled by a corporation. According to Shopify, half of the consumers (50 %) prefer to support independently-owned businesses for many reasons, including supporting new business, buying unique products, and receiving excellent customer service.

Shopify advises small retailers to highlight the pros of their business models and use features offered by large retailers to meet consumer needs, including fast and free shipping.

Six in 10 (59%) surveyed consumers say free delivery would improve their online shopping experience, while 40% say free returns and 34% say faster delivery would make online shopping better.

4. Wallet Power

Consumers prefer green or sustainable products, according to Shopify data, and 49 percent respond positively to retailers who donate to a cause with each purchase.

The main reasons consumers shop at a local-owned business (online or in-store) is to support local job creation (57 percent), strengthen the local economy (41 percent), and invest in their community (41 percent) (35 percent ).

5. Brand Building – eCommerce Business

Brand building has never been more difficult—in a world where marketplaces rule and search is unbranded.

Consumers search for solutions rather than brands on marketplaces, which account for half of all global e-commerce sales.

Customers are beginning their purchase journey on Amazon, where they search by categories, benefits, and reviews. As per analysts, search has evolved into a new brand:

  • A brand name is not included in 70% of Amazon searches.
  • Search, not branded ads or merchandising, accounts for 90% of Amazon product views.

Thus, the future of e-commerce in India and around the world looks brighter than ever. With the upward trend of digitalization, the retail experience takes a new avatar.
