H-1B visa: On Monday, President Trump signed the executive order to hire American workers for federal agencies, also to prevent contracts and subcontracts for foreign employees. This event happened after June 23 when president trump suspended an H-1b visa along with H-2b, J, and L category visas.
This action was taken for the interest of American workers who were facing unemployment. Tuesday, Nasscom made a statement that this action was taken based on misperceptions and misinformation.
Nasscom (National Association of software and service companies) is a trade association for the Indian information technology sector and was founded in 1988. It is a non-profit organization. The organization was co-founded by Devang Mehta and Nandan Nilekani.
“30-day period ending 13 May 2020, there were over 6,25,000 active job vacancy postings advertised online for jobs in common computer occupations, including those most common to H-1B visa holders,” Nasscom said. Infosys, COO Pravin Rao commented, “On the H1-B visa,
various independent studies have demonstrated the value that Indian IT service providers bring to the US economy and how they make the American companies very competitive. Having said that, in the short-term, we don’t see any impact”
H-1B visa allows companies to hire employees at cheaper wages from developing countries like India and China. This category of visas is highly beneficial for employees and employers which led to a lack of jobs for American workers.

These kinds of short term immigration visas such as H-1B and L-1 help bridge the gap for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills in the US workforce. In 2019 Google and amazon hired over 2500 employees approved by an H-1B visa.
This visa should be used for top-paid talent to create American jobs, not as inexpensive labor programs, and to destroy American jobs. This talent would be useful in the post-pandemic times to rebuild the US economy.
